Año 2023 – Domplein 3, Utrecht.
Uno de los sumideros del patio ha decidido declararse en huelga: las condiciones son pésimas, está agotado y no puede tragar más. Tras los primeros días de lluvia el agua ha empezado a acumularse alrededor del sumidero, formando un gran charco en cuyos márgenes paja y juncos han comenzado a crecer. Esto le ha dado al charco la apariencia de un pequeño estanque, aunque hay algo extraño en este estanque. Sumergida en el agua, una luz parpadea mandando una señal de S-O-S en código morse, alguien necesita ayuda. Sin embargo, los únicos testigos de esta llamada son grupo de latas de Heineken que flotan cerca de la orilla del estanque. Las latas llevan tanto tiempo en el agua que han empezado a comportarse como ranas: nadan, croan e intentan cazar los insectos que se acercan al estanque. De vez cuando se miran y se dicen:
-This party is amazing!
“Frog pond” es una instalación ad hoc, concebida por el artista Víctor Santamarina para el patio interior del Instituto Cervantes. La instalación toma como punto de partida la actual coyuntura climática y especula con un futuro inminente y distópico, en el que la naturaleza se ha terminado de agotar y la consistencia de la cultura occidental se ha disuelto definitivamente. En este escenario, los rastros materiales de la actividad humana han conseguido emanciparse de las categorías ontológicas que les habían sido impuestas, dando lugar a nuevas formas híbridas capaces de redefinir su identidad, su rol y su agencia en el entorno y la temporalidad que habitan.

One of the drains in the backyard has decided to go on strike— the conditions are appalling, it is exhausted, and unable to swallow anymore. After the first few rainy days, water started to gather around the drain, forming a huge puddle where straw and reeds have started to grow. This has given the puddle the looks of a small pond, but there is something strange about it. Buried in water, a light flashes sending an S.O.S signal in Morse code— somebody needs help. However, the only witnesses of such a call are a group of Heineken cans that float near the edge of the pond. The cans have been underwater for so long they have started to behave as frogs: they swim, they croak, and they try to catch bugs that approach the pond. Sometimes, they stare at each other and say:
“This party is amazing!”
“Frog Pond” is an site-specific installation, created by the artist Víctor Santamarina for Instituto Cervantes’ inner courtyard. This project takes the current climate change issue as a starting point, and ponders over an impending and dystopian future in which nature has exhausted itself and the steadiness of Western culture has disappeared for good. In this scenario, the remains of human life have managed to set themselves free from the ontological categories that had been imposed on them, birthing new hybrid beings capable of redefining their identities, their roles, and their independence within the environment and the transitoriness they inhabit.

Een van de afvoerputjes op de binnenplaats heeft besloten te gaan staken – de omstandigheden zijn verschrikkelijk, het is uitgeput en kan niet meer slikken. Na de eerste paar regenachtige dagen is het water zich beginnen ophopen rond de afvoer, waardoor er een grote plas is ontstaan met stro en riet dat langs de randen groeit. Hierdoor ziet de plas eruit als een kleine vijver, maar er is iets vreemds aan de hand. Onder water flikkert een lampje dat een S-O-S signaal in morsecode uitzendt – iemand heeft hulp nodig, maar de enige getuigen van deze oproep zijn enkele Heineken-blikjes die aan de rand vijver drijven. De blikjes liggen al zo lang in het water dat ze zich beginnen te gedragen als kikkers: ze zwemmen, kwaken en proberen insecten te vangen die de vijver naderen. Af en toe kijken ze elkaar aan en zeggen tegen elkaar:
-This party is amazing!
“Frog pond” is een ad hoc installatie, ontworpen door de kunstenaar Víctor Santamarina voor de binnenplaats van het Instituto Cervantes. De installatie neemt de huidige klimatologische situatie als uitgangspunt en speculeert over een dreigende, dystopische toekomst, waarin de natuur is uitgeput en de standvastigheid van de westerse cultuur definitief is opgelost. In dit scenario zijn de materiële sporen van menselijke activiteit erin geslaagd om zich te bevrijden van de ontologische categorieën die hen zijn opgelegd, waardoor nieuwe hybride vormen zijn ontstaan die in staat zijn om hun identiteit, hun rol en hun betrokkenheid bij de omgeving en de tijd waarin ze leven opnieuw te definiëren.
